Getting Started

Do I need to register to use Resilient-C?

No, users are no longer required to register to use the site. To get started, click the "Select a New Community" link on the left-hand side of your screen.

Does it cost money to use Resilient-C?

No, Resilient-C is free and open for anyone to use, thanks to funding provided by the Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction, and Response (MEOPAR) Network, a Network Centre of Excellence in Canada; and hosting for the platform provided by the University of British Columbia.

How can I get started using Resilient-C?

We have created tutorials to walk you through using Resilient-C for the first time. We have also included links to our most recent webinars describing the platform in greater detail.

Using the Site

How do I start looking at which communities are similar to mine?

Start by clicking on the "Select a New Community" link on the left-hand side of your screen and selecting your reference community from the drop down menu or by clicking on a map marker. The Community Profile page for that community will appear and this community will be the one with which other communities are compared.

Next, click on the "Find Similar Communities" link on the left-hand side of your screen to open the Similarity Map page. The top ten most similar communities will be listed along the side or bottom of your screen, and every community in the dataset will appear on the map with a marker denoting its similarity rating, with more similar communities shown in oranges and reds and less similar communities in blues.

You can use map filters to refine your search to match the specific capitals, indicators, hazard exposures, or action categories of greatest interest to you.

  • A more detailed walkthrough of how to use Resilient-C can be found in the site's tutorial (English | Français)
How can I go back to the analysis after reading content from the "About" or "Help" pages?

You can return to an analysis using your browser's back button or start a new analysis by clicking on the "Select a New Community" link on the left-hand panel.

What does it mean if a "Degree of Exposure" is not available?

Unfortunately we do not currently have hazard exposure data for all five of the hazards we track for every community in our database. When you see the degree of exposure listed as "Not available" it means this data is currently missing.

How can I find out more about an indicator (e.g., data source, how it was developed)?

Basic information about each indicator can be found on our indicators page. You can access the page by selecting "Vulnerability Indicators" from the "Research" menu item.

How do I quickly change the Reference or Comparison Community?

Method 1: Start with the new community by selecting the "Select a New Community" link on the left-hand side of your screen, then click on "Compare Communities" link and select a second community to explore side-by-side.

Method 2: On the "Compare Communities" page, use the drop down menus under "Community Comparisons" to change either the reference or comparison community.

I would like to correct/change the information on a community's profile page, how can I do that?

For the moment this is a manual process. Please contact us and describe how the profile page information should be corrected (e.g., updated contact information, new links to community plans). We'll get back to you as quickly as we can!

Future Work

When will new communities be represented on the platform?

We are always working to expand the platform to include additional coastal communities. A significant amount of work goes into the data collection and GIS modeling to add a new community, so we can't commit to specific times for updates.

If you are a representative of a community that would like to see your community represented on Resilient-C and can assist with some of the data collection, please contact us to see what would be required to add your community to a future update.

Why are some hazards not included, such as hurricanes or wildfires?

The primary goal for Resilient-C is to facilitate knowledge sharing among coastal communities in Canada, and so we have focused on the most pressing hazards for coastal communities nationally. Coastal and riverine flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, and contaminant spills are by no means the only hazards coastal communities face, however. We recognize that hurricanes, wildfires, sea-level rise, and other impacts from global climate change are also a growing concern, and we are exploring how to integrate these hazards into the platform.

The biggest issue we face in integrating new new hazards into the platform is finding high quality, high resolution exposure datasets that cover the entire country. If you happen to know of such a data set, please contact us with additional information. We would be more than happy to take a look!
